SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, in response to a post where a Twitter user shared an article titled “Does America need a president?” published in the New York Times, commented by saying: “A very real question… As it is quite obvious, we have been without a president for some time.”

The article, written by Ross Douthat in the NYT, argued that 81-year-old US President Joe Biden should step down, stating that “Biden needs to be replaced by another candidate because having an aged president in the White House for 4 years would be extremely dangerous.”

Prior to the elections on November 5, Biden and his opponent former US President Donald Trump had their first live debate on June 27.

Biden’s performance in the debate raised concerns, and the NYT reported that the Democrat leader was considering withdrawing from the race. The White House denied these claims, with Biden stating that he would continue running. President Biden attributed his poor performance in the debate to “jet lag.”

According to CNN, senior members of the Democratic Party were advocating for Biden to withdraw from the race. These members reportedly shared their opinions during a meeting organized by Democratic Party member Congressman Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday.

Among the Democrats calling for Biden to step down were Representatives Mark Takano, Adam Smith, Jim Himes, Joe Morelle, Jerry Nadler, and Susan Wild. Representatives Nadler and Morelle represent New York, Smith represents Washington, Jim Himes represents Connecticut, and Takano represents California.

It was also reported that many individuals were in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris running instead of Biden.

Meanwhile, the issue of Biden’s candidacy also affected donations to the Democratic Party. Abigail Disney from the Disney family announced last week that she had suspended her financial support to the Democratic Party until Harris enters the race in place of Biden.

Entrepreneur Gideon Stein also mentioned that he had suspended his planned $3.5 million donation until Biden withdraws from the race.

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix known for his donations to the Democrats, also called for Biden to withdraw from the race.
